Play Sinterklaas Memory

The Dutch Sinterklaas tradition

Every November Sinterklaas arrives in Holland to celebrate his birthday on December the 5th with us. This typical Dutch tradition is full of funny facts:

  • Sinterklaas lives in Spain and travels with his steamboat
  • This boat is filled with gifts, candy (pepernoten), letters made of chocolate and meringues
  • We all welcome Sinterklaas at the Dock by singing Sinterklaas songs
  • His arrival is broadcasted on national television
  • There’s even a (very popular) Sinterklaas news every evening
  • Once in Holland, Sinterklaas exchanges his boat for his horse called Ozosnel
  • Every evening children fill their shoe with a carrot for Ozosnel and a drawing for Sinterklaas
  • The next day the carrot and drawing magically changed into small gifts
  • On the 5th of December we celebrate ‘Pakjesavond’ (gifts evening)
  • Sinterklaas has a book filled with stories of all Dutch children
  • Based on those stories Sinterklaas determines whether the children have behaved and if they deserve a present
  • With these gifts comes a poem which summarizes the past year of the receiver
  • On the 6th of December Sinterklaas returns to Spain

By playing this memory game you will know the tradition of Sinterklaas a bit better. Find his horse Ozosnel, the book of Sinterklaas and some delicious treats!
